Cape Town, Winelands and Garden Route

Category: Golf Holidays South Africa

The Western Cape forms the most southerly portion of South Africa and offers varied terrain and landscapes from fynbos and spectacular mountain ranges to ocean vistas and the semi-desert plains of the dusty Karoo. The province has an extensive coastline and is bordered by both the temperate Indian and the cold Atlantic Oceans.

With the landmark Table Mountain as a backdrop to the city, Cape Town has become known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is the perfect base for visitors, allowing easy access to the various sites dotting the peninsula as well as the nearby winelands of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek.

The Western Cape is an extremely diverse province both in its cultures and landscapes as well as its flora and fauna. Visitors to the Western Cape can also enjoy a wide variety of good food and good wines at many well-priced restaurants and, for golf enthusiasts a host of award winning golf courses await. The province has a well-laid out network of motorways.

Western Cape Attractions

Cape Town offers the visitor an array of tourist attractions such as cable car trips up Table Mountain, The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve at Cape Point, Camp's Bay beaches, The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, internationally acclaimed Kistenbosch Botanical Gardens and the surrounding Cape Wine Route.

History lovers will find a host of sites to visit including the Dutch East India Company Castle, The Rhodes Memorial, De Tuynhuys and the Bo-Kaap Mallay district to name a few. Other noteworthy sites are The Afrikaans Language Monument in Paarl, The Diaz Museum in Mossel Bay and the historic towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Swellendam.

The Garden Route is one of the most visited regions in South Africa. Mountains crowd close to a shoreline dotted with beaches and bays, and vividly coloured wild flowers delight the eye. Between Heidelberg and Storms River Storms, the Garden Route runs parallel to a coastline featuring lakes, mountains, tall indigenous forests, amber-coloured rivers and golden beaches.

Meandering trails are followed by hikers, the forests invite long, leisurely drives, and the lakes and rivers lend themselves to swimming, boating and fishing. A wide range of leisure options, spectacular scenery and a mild climate guarantee an unforgettable holiday experience when visiting the Garden Route in South Africa.

When one reflects on the splendours of the Cape - lush green valleys, rugged mountains, azure seas and sky - then the Cape Winelands are usually top of the list. Visitors pour into the Cape to experience our viticulture, restored Cape Dutch farmsteads with their distinctive gables and thatched roofs, and the mountains that form the dramatic backdrop to all of this.

The Western Cape has a long and rich winemaking heritage that was first founded by Simon van der Stel, the Governor of the Cape, in 1685. The Cape’s Winelands are some of the most scenic in the world and wine tourism is one of South Africa’s fastest growing industries.

Western Cape Golf Holidays

A golf holiday in the Western Cape is an awe-inspiring experience. There are so many world-class golf courses to choose from and it is hardly possible to play enough of these stunning courses during one single trip.

Cape Town's finest courses include Steenberg, Royal Cape and Westlake. Just over the mountain you'll find the pristine Winelands courses, such as Erinvale, Pearl Valley, Stellenbosch and De Zalze. Driving east you'll find Arabella near Hermanus en route to the Garden Route.

Golf's Hall of Fame legend Jack Nicklaus pointed out that the Garden Route will become the world's most sought after golf destination within a few decades. This comes as no surprise with courses such as his very own Simola, Ernie Els signature Oubaai, Greg Norman signature Le Grande George, new entry Pinnacle Point - which was voted in the top 10 new courses in the world - and of course, the Gary Player masterpieces as Fancourt: The Links, Outeniqua, Montagu and Bramble Hill.

Other fantastic golf courses along the Garden Route include George Golf Club, Mossel Bay Golf Club, Goose Valley and Kingswood.

Soaring above the glittering Knysna lagoon and offering breathtaking mountain and ocean views, Pezula enjoys a setting that has to be seen to be believed. It nestles in its own golf estate on an exclusive cliff-top retreat. It is surrounded by an aromatic mantle of Cape coastal fynbos - bushes, trees and wild flowers teeming with birds.

And it overlooks a nature reserve, while also encompassing the exquisite sheltered beach at nearby Noetzie...

Although no individual can lay claim to the overall design of Pearl Valley, the masterplan was shaped by the vision of Jack Nicklaus. This golf legend sees the Pearl Valley course as the sum of his knowledge and his experience. To meet the ‘Golden Bear’s’ uncompromising standards of golf course design and aesthetic beauty, a combination of the intense colours of the greens and fairways, together with the brilliant white river sand lining the bunkers was carefully planned, to make Pearl Valley the most visually spectacular golf course in the country.
